Proposals likely for raising cig, masala VAT to 40%

Uttar Pradesh cabinet, during its meeting on Wednesday is likely to take up some important development projects including proposals to increase VAT on cigarette and paan masala, ban on sale of loose cigarette and new policy of surrender and rehabilitation of Naxals.

State government charges 25% VAT on cigarettes and 30% on paan masala and proposal is to raise it to 40% for both. The cabinet will also take up issue of procuring 500 more ambulances for operation under the “Dial 108” scheme.

The cabinet will also take up proposals to establish an artificial limb and rehabilitation center at Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University, 191 Model Schools for quality education in rural areas under public-private partnership (PPP) model, new police headquarters building and to develop educational institutes based on Ashram system on the pattern of Navodaya Vidyalayas.
